AQA A-Level Biology flashcards

Written for AQA A-Level Biology (7402), with the required practicals and practical skills in their own deck. The bold words on every card are the exact mark-scheme key words that earn the marks.

2 decks · 197 cards in total

These decks follow the AQA A-Level Biology specification (7402). A-Level marking is far stricter than GCSE on exact terminology, so the cards are built around it: associates and dissociates rather than picks up and drops, denatured rather than killed, many monomers rather than monomers joined. The bold words are the words that earn the mark.

The required practicals deck covers all twelve practicals plus the practical skills that Paper 3 tests, including the maths and the statistics. It is separate from the topic decks because AQA examines practical skills across all three papers rather than inside one topic.

Every deck is a one-time payment with lifetime access, and the first three cards of each are free to read before you buy.

1.1 Monomers and polymersDefinition
Question
What is a monomer?
Answer
A smaller, repeating molecule or unit from which larger molecules (polymers) are made.
Examples: monosaccharides, amino acids, nucleotides.
Tutor tip
Saying 'building block' is not specific enough and will not gain the mark. Saying just 'a small molecule' will not gain the mark either. You must say it is repeating, and that larger molecules or polymers are made from it.
1.1 Monomers and polymersDefinition
Question
What is a polymer?
Answer
A molecule made from many identical or similar monomers joined together.
Tutor tip
The key word is many. It is not a polymer if it is made from only a couple or a few monomers. You must say many, or at least a large number of, to gain the mark.
1.1 Monomers and polymersMarking points
Question
Describe what happens in a condensation reaction. (3 marks)
Answer
  1. Two molecules join together
  2. Forming a chemical bond
  3. Releasing a water molecule
Tutor tip
Key words: join, forming, bond, releasing, water. This looks very short for 3 marks, but these are exactly the 3 key marking points, so do not waste time writing a long answer.
