Describe the levels of organisation, from cell to organism.
Answer
  • Cell: the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism, for example a muscle cell
  • Tissue: a group of cells with a similar structure and function working together, for example muscle tissue
  • Organ: a group of different tissues working together to perform a specific function, for example the stomach
  • Organ system: a group of organs working together, for example the digestive system
  • Organism: an entire living individual made of organ systems working together
2.1 Principles of organisationMarking points
Question
Name the organs of the digestive system.
Answer
Food passes through, in order: mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine
Food does not pass through these, but they produce substances that aid digestion: salivary glands, liver, gall bladder, pancreas

Question
Define digestion.
Answer
The process of breaking down large, insoluble food molecules into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Tutor tip
The words insoluble to soluble are what earn the mark. 'Breaking food into smaller bits' is not enough.
