5.1 HomeostasisMarking points
Question
Describe how internal conditions are regulated by an automatic control system.
Answer
  • Receptor cells, for example temperature receptors in the skin, detect a stimulus, a change in the internal or external environment
  • Coordination centres, for example the brain, spinal cord or pancreas, receive and process information from the receptors
  • Effectors, muscles or glands, bring about responses that restore optimum levels
  • These systems may involve nervous responses, chemical (hormonal) responses, or both
Tutor tip
Learn the three as an order, not a list. The marks follow the sequence: what detected the change, what processed it, what acted on it.
5.2.1 The nervous systemMarking points
Question
Describe reflex actions and the reflex arc.
Answer
  • A reflex action is automatic and rapid, and does not involve the conscious part of the brain
  • Reflex actions are protective, minimising damage to the body
  • The reflex arc: receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone (in the spinal cord) → motor neurone → effector
Tutor tip
The relay neurone is what makes it a reflex. It is in the spinal cord, so the impulse never reaches the conscious brain.
5.3.2 Control of blood glucose concentrationMarking points
Question
Describe Type 1 diabetes and how it is treated.
Answer
  • The pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin, so blood glucose concentration is uncontrolled and high
  • Treated with regular insulin injections to lower blood glucose when it rises, for example after a meal

Who it is for

These flashcards are for AQA GCSE Biology students who want the exact mark-scheme wording for Topic 5, rather than vague definitions that drop marks. They suit both Combined Science (Trilogy) and separate Biology students, with the Biology-only cards on the brain, the eye, body temperature, the kidneys and plant hormones clearly flagged, and the Higher-tier cards flagged too.

How access works

Three cards from the deck are free to read on this page. To unlock the full deck, buy it once for £4.99. This is a one-time payment, not a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Is this deck for the AQA specification?

Yes. It is written specifically for AQA GCSE Biology (8461) and the Biology content of Combined Science: Trilogy (8464), Topic 5 Homeostasis and Response, with every card matched to the mark scheme. It is not affiliated with AQA.

What does it cover?

All of Topic 5: homeostasis and automatic control systems, the nervous system and reflex arcs, the brain, the eye, control of body temperature, the endocrine system, blood glucose and diabetes, water and nitrogen balance including the kidneys and dialysis, hormones in human reproduction, contraception, infertility treatment, adrenaline and thyroxine, and plant hormones. There are 78 cards.

Does it cover the Biology-only and Higher-tier content?

Yes, and both are flagged on the card. 39 cards are Biology only, covering the brain, the eye, body temperature, water and nitrogen balance and plant hormones, and 22 are Higher tier. Combined Science and Foundation students can filter them out.

Do I get lifetime access?

Yes. It is a one-time payment, not a subscription. Once you buy the deck you keep access permanently on any device you sign in on.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. The viewer is built mobile-first, so you can flip, shuffle and filter cards on your phone, which is how most students revise.

Can I try it before I buy?

Yes. Three cards from the deck are free to read on this page. Buy once to unlock all 78.

Are the required practicals in this deck?

No. Required practicals 7 and 8 belong to this topic but are in the required practicals deck instead, because AQA examines them as their own strand and most students revise them separately. Putting them in both decks would mean paying twice for the same cards.
